which black is which?
May 2nd, 2004, 10:59am

gday fellas

was wondering if somebody could help with the following problem:

am extending a ring at a socket position - except that all wires going in and out of this socket are singles (meaning you get two of each wire and the additional earth - but can't tell which direction each is going.
been told by those who know more that it doesn't really matter if it's on the ring.   just would like some confirmation that this is correct.

any suggestions / comments would be appreciated.

if you just want to add a socket, make it a spur, i.e take 1 new cable to new socket twin+earth (2.5mm) or singles (2.5mm) and then ensure the correct terminations are done correctly.

three doubles go in place of a single - hence they need to be on the ring.  there will also be a couple of spurs (on FCU's) running from a couple of the doubles.

my concern is that if i just extend the ring without knowing what sets each of the wires is there might be sth that might cause a fault in the future.
Thanks.

yep, pretty sure i see what your saying now, if it was me, id have all the covers off, and isolate circuit, and then proceed to test each of the L N and CPC in turn until i could identify it, so yeah you do need to find out in order to do ring correctly, i would suggest you test it some way or another!

it dosent matter, aslong as the ring is kept as a ring, you dont need to know which leg goes where, aslong as the ring is maintained.
when you add the spurs its one per socket

i.e.
a)if you have 20 sockets you can only have 20 spurs

b) its one spur per socket, not allowed two spurs from one socket

that doesnt help much tho because he claims to have 3 wires for each? or ive made a mistake somewhere, if its 2 then theres no problem, but with 3 you would need to find out which is which

Smiley sorry for the confusion  -  i meant the ring gets extended by "three" double sockets in place of "one" single socket.
nevertheless, there are  two wires for both L and N and an additional third green/yellow for earthing the existing single socket.

i'm planning to run two spurs from the two new double sockets.

all's confirmed - thanks to both LS and SS
