Rabiit Hutch, what kind of wood to use
Jun 14th, 2004, 11:23am

Thinking about re-building our rabbit hutch. Current one is 6 years old and rood is leaking a bit and the sides have been repaired about umpteen times since the rabbit chews through them.

What kind of wood should I use. I know I shouldn't use pressure treated stuff since it will be bad for the rabbit if she chews it. I assume WBP ply is ok, but what about the legs and frame, should I use hardwood or what? Could I use softwood, and treat afterward with a varnish?

heeelllooo h j

i made one for my brothers kids

it didnt fit them so they gave it to the rabbits[groan]

i used 12mm exterior ply

the top overhangs by 2 inches at the back
5 at the front 2 at the side
all made from ply except front wire framed door

make the door half an inch smaller than the opening
if you use chicken wire make shure the wire goes
all the way round[rolls al round the wood on all edges]
this will give the wood some protection

at the bottom  make sure you plan to overlap the
sides and back by two and a half inches

make the base up with 2by 2 round all edges
which goes underneath
this give the sides somthing solid to fix to
it also gives you half inch overlap at the bottom
to shed water
if you want leggs just use 2by2 down each
corner through the base to the ground
i personaly used bricks  Grin Grin Grin

getting board now if you like any more info

just ask Shocked Shocked Shocked

We do put a piece of wood with the bark still on for Magic to nibble as she nibbled many holes in the side of the old one.
