Outside Stand Pipe

My sister-in-law asked me what was involved in getting a water tap near her veggie patch, which is about 100 feet down her garden. I said I would ask the experts (who will probably tel me to get a plumber in to do it!).

Something like -

MDPE pipe buried, if so how deep does it have to be buried to prevent freezing? And what sort of connections at each end? Or forget the whole idea?

I don't know the legalities of this but I would have thought at least 6in down. That trench will be your biggest job. Andrew

Water regs say 750mm min. Depending where you intended to connect it a stopcock, single check valve, and a means off draining the pipe out. I would connect at a point where the mains enters the house an fit a seperate stopcock in the ground down the garden. scruff

Andrew I think MDPE IS that blue piping.

Blimey Scruff water regs are as bad as IEE regs; 750mm is the same as buring swa (armoured) cable.

(a) Does it have to conform to the water regs if a check valve is used (which I know IS needed anyway)?

(b) were it buried only just below surface and drained at the end of each year (to prevent freezing) would that be OK. The idea of digging down 750 over some 100 feet fills me with awe, maybe have to hire a mini jcb.

RR you can use the mdpe as a hose pipe and connect it to an outside tap at the house, provided its not in sunlight.

You could also use speed fit the same way, or even a long garden hose.

Frost in this country is unlikely to reach more than 300mm. We fit pipes above ground lagged them, and then water proof the lagging, design is for -15c for an hour.
