Rcd trips with no cicuits powered up
Jun 21st, 2004, 6:38pm

i have just installed a split load consumer unit with rcd i have put all the lighting and smoke alarm on the non RCD side and the ring main's and shower on the RCD side of the board , i have not yet put in the ceiling roses and shower unit , though all the cable is there ready to do so , every time i power up the consumer unit (with no cicuits on) the RCD trips immediatley, i do not understand why as im sure all the wiring is correct , i also do not understand why it is tripping with nothing powered up, i know i have a protective mutiple earth (PME) can this cause this to happen or could it just be a faulty RCD

When you say 'no circuits ON' do you mean all MCBs are in off position? If so the most likely cause is that you have a neutral-earth short somwhere. Remove each neutral from the N block and at each removal try the RCD (mind fingers!) until it locks on, the last neutral you removed is the culprit. Best of luck.

RR

If ya get to end of neutrals and it still trips THEN you have a duff RCD until then assume its OK (unless ya have an RCD tester in which test the RCD!)

thank you RR for your prompt reply i will do what you suggested first thing tommorow , am i right in thinking that the non RCD neutral block is the nearest one to the main switch , im just hoping i have not put all the RCD neutrals to the wrong block  Undecided as i look at the consumer unit i have a main switch with a  neutral block above it in the middle of the consumer unit i have an rcd with a  neutral block above it from this block i have a  neutral that goes directly to the bottom of the rcd

Some consumer units, even split-load ones, have a link between both Neutral bars. If you intend to use the board as a split-load item you must remove this link first.

The link is only there if you are not fitting an RCD incomer.

Yes you can get it wrong and I think you have answered your own question. Get them a-about-face and what your RCD is doing is saving you from yourself (only joking mate).

Depends on make but the MK Sentry split units the left N bar is non RCD and the right N bar is RCD side. And as TT says if it has a link (I have never seen one with bgut that is not to say it possible) then remove it as TT says)
