Pointing
Aug 9th, 2004, 12:19pm

I need to do some pointing . The existing is white, though the local sand is red. Any ideas?

Is there a particular type of sand I should ask for, and what would be a suitable ratio to cement?

Thanks

John

you will need to do some ringing around, your local builders merchant may help, but there will be a local supplier who deals with stone masons. Here in Northamptonshire, ordinary concreting sand is red, but we have a local specialist supplier that can supply some seven different colours.

Slightly underhand, but try contacting a local mason and asking a) if he is interested, but b) how he would go about matching the sand.

If you can't find it, try play sand and lime

get a bag of hydrated lime and mix a small batch four sand one o.p.c. and one lime and do a half square metre, leave for a couple of days and see how it matches... if no good you can rake it out. Better still you will probably get a peck of lime from a busted bag at the merchants for an experimental job... wet down walls well before you start so that mortar cures slowly.
