all been heavilly argued over on the (currently down) screwfix forums

diyers shouldn't be touching 3 phase anyway and most pros will test EVERYTHING in case the previous installer didn't follow the rules

The strange bit is this.....

We all used 3 core armour for outside sockets/ponds etc.....

By convention.....
RED was live
BLUE was neutral
YELLOW wa earth

(if you did a really good job, you cleeved the blue BLACK and the yellow GREEN/YELLOW)

But now........we have BROWN, BLACK, GREY to use.

OK.

BROWN live

I then want to use black as the neutral (cause it was), and grey as the earth.

BUT, NIC have said (its not stamped down in gold) that GREY should be neutral(as it is the old blue), and black should be the earth.

Sleeving is deffinantly needed now!!

Numbers and letters seem to be the new principal form of ident given in BS7671 now, with brown or blue sleeving as optional extra. However I agree with you on this one Lec, sleeving for domestic would be better. I don't think Mr & Mrs Diyer are going to go out and buy a bundle of cable idents, but there may be some hope of getting them to use sleeving if the sheds ever sell it.

my house just got re-wired but they went and disconnected the 12v lights i had, cleverly, wired to the ring(because there was a cable there which I thought was downstairs lights) using 6mm T&E(coz thats what I had) in a J-box. My question is, if they re-wired using new colours, how will I know which ones to connect to?
I think I might run the light on the downstairs lighting circuit this time as I have an idea where they ran the cables.
Sleeving the ends doesnt help when you cut into the middle of a cable, know what i mean.

PS please stifle your laughter if you can.

But this is where the problem is, because I was doing some harmonized 6mm 3C SWA, and I did have all the new sleeving blue&brown etc, but no way I had it to go other 6mm cable, only large sleeving I had was earth sleeving!

In the end I used insulation tapes for the earth and neutral

The problem is with the numbers, the adhesive ones can fall off, and there way too fiddly trying to get them on, then there expensive, and are really only suited to large cables like meter tails

The only good numbers/letters I think are the discs that slide on  Roll Eyes

You shouldnt have that much problem as theres only a set combination

Below is a chart so you can see what the colours were and are now.

i can see it both ways
thinking from scratch black neutral grey earth makes most sense

however grey live black earth makes more sense from the POV of cable jointing because it means someone jointing new 3 core armoured to old (perhaps because of damage or whatever) doesn't have to worry about two different color mappings

PEEPS - If you are an electrician, and you come across ANY cable of ANY colour, you MUST ALREADY KNOW that you should treat each core as being potentially LIVE and therefore test accordingly.

Latest NIC blurb states that black should be sleeved as per CPC colours, which I think is daft.

Just done a single-phase install using 3 core SWA in new colours - sleeved Brown in Red, left Black as Black, and sleeved Grey in CPC colours.

Makes sense to me!

Cheers mate - 'markers' was the word I was searching for. I've tried searching for tags, clips, labels, etc but not found exactly what I was looking for in the past. I've tended to use the adhesive cloth type, but the plastic 'markers' look much more durable.
