What came first, the suite or the tiles?
Nov 17th, 2004, 7:59am

Ok, a little off topic'ish, but what do the plumbing fraternity believe is the right way to go about meeting tiles with basins, baths, etc?

Should you fix the basin to the wall and tile up to it, and then silicon it?

Or should the basin be left slightly off the wall and the tiles buried slightly behind the basin and then silicon'd?

I only ask as I've read both suggestions and would like to hear the plumbers view. I'll ask this on the decorators forum too!

Thanks Scruff, but just to clarify, you mean butt the bath and shower to the wall then tile to it.. but the basin, tile first then butt the basin to the tiles?

yes;

basin and wc sits on the tiles, bath and shower is better to waterproof if fitted first.

Some fittings/showers require you to fit the continental way, tile first or they don't fit.

yeah, fittings to the wall, then tile. I prefer whole place tiled first for a neater look but you can have trouble with the sealing. Which reminds me i gotta finish pulling the artex off the kitchen ceiling.......

Fit the bath and shower first, then seal where it butts up against the wall. Then tile down to the bath/shower tray and silicone again. That way any water running down the tiles runs onto the edge of the bath/shower and stands more chance of getting back into the bath.
Toilets and basins tile the wall first and then seal.
