Boiler Replacement
Nov 22nd, 2004, 10:31pm

I installed my boiler 19 years ago having purchased it together with all the central heating parts and a set of drawings and instructions from Texas Heating - Yes, you could do that in those days.  Anyway, it is now giving up the ghost and I need some advice on what to replace it with.

The currect model is marked as Texas, but if one looks carefully you can find the Myson name.  It's a balanced flue, wall mounted version with an output of 75,000 Btus.  It supplies the required heat to a five bedroom house and the domestic hot water.

Any ideas?

There are loads of plumbing firms specialising in replacement central heating systems. Best bet is to ask friends for reccomendations on local corgi registered firms. Get a few quotes too and make sure they are like for like quotes. The salesman will be able to advise just what products are available to you at the moment and which are best suited to your needs. There are so many aspects to consider when designing a central heating system that a full honest answer to your question would be hard to acheive. Some pointers are.

energy efficiency(insulation, condensing systems etc)
boiler heat output vs required heat output
radiator sizing(worked out by heat loss calculations based on each room and aesthetics)
system "hardware" (small bore vs microbore, rad makes etc)
budget

Without actually visiting your home, these points can only be assessed so far.
Reccomendations from customers are the best way to size up a company for this kind of job. Also don't be cheap, trying to cut corners will leave you with a less than adequate system. As i said get a few quotes for like for like systems and weigh up the companies from past jobs etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.  However, I'm more than happy with my heating system itself.  It has three timed zones (upstairs and dowstairs separate plus hot water) and all radiators on thermostats.  The runs are all in an appropriate mix of 15mm and 22mm copper and it all works very well.  However, after 19 years, the boiler is knackered.  Hence, I just need something to replace it.

Looking around at various boards, I had gained the impression that switching to a condensing boiler would not be appropriate with thermostats on the rad's, so I expected that it would be best replacing the boiler on a like-for-like basis to the extent that such is possible.  However, there are so many to choose from and I don't want to get ripped off by some "apparently" knowledgeable heating engineer, so I wanted to have general idea of what I needed before approaching the trade.
