Ugly fireplace/hearth on floor

Hi
I've just had the laminate flooring taken up in the living room/dining room of my Victorian house. The floorboards have been sanded, but I'm left with an ugly outcrop at floor level from the old hearth. What's the best way to disguise this... is it to buy a brand new fireplace with hearth that comes out far enough to cover this?
What do people usually do when faced with this problem in a Victorian property?
I want my rooms to look modern and not 'period'.
Thanks

How about a piece of 2 cm thick slate. Stand a big vase on it if you don't want a new fireplace.
