Chipped gloss paint
Mar 21st, 2006, 11:12am

What's the best thing to do with woodwork which has been glossed several times but has the odd deep chip in it (down a few coats and sometimes down to bare wood)?   ???

I want to re-gloss the woodwork but the chips will show through if I don't do anything about them.

i am no expert  Grin

but i would rub down for a good key and feather any edges
patch prime then undercoat as required on the dammaged areas
fill as required rub down
paint as normal Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
i recon i will score 8 out of 10 for effort Wink

7½ out of 10. See me after school.  Grin

As big-all says, jimcam, except I would fill after patch priming and before undercoating. You only need to patch prime on the bare wood, if any.

You will probably be able to use fine surface polyfilla, fill, let dry, and carefully rub down with some fine paper.
Then undercoat and finish.

I agree with Hamilton, especially if the chips are on the flat bits, but if its on the corners/edge, then you can sand them out .

Thanks everyone. I'll give that method a go.  Grin

Any tips on the glossing?  Wink

I know not to load the brush too much and to paint from old paint back to fresh paint when working along a surface.

Don't overload the brush. Try and keep a nice even coat, and lay it off nice a gently.

Important thing I think, is to keep the area clean and dust free. Use a clean brush and a clean paint kettle. Hoover round before painting, and wipe over the surface with a tack rag to pick up any dust. If you don't have a tack rag, wipe with a damp, lint free cloth.

And don't smoke while you are painting, you will cough and get fag ash everywhere.
