Series.

Both timeclock and room stat need to call for the central heating to be on.

Unless it is a frost stat, in which case it is in parallel with the timeclock in order to bypass it when its frosty!

I vote both series and parallel Grin ...  The switched live outputs need to be in series to control the load but what about powering the second one in the chain?

Lets say live comes into the time clock then switched live from the time clock goes to the stat. If you do that the stat is unpowered when the time clock switches off. You either need to use an old fashioned stat that doesn't need a permanant live power or one with seperate  terminals for powering the stat and the load. If you don't the fancy LCD display on the stat will go blank when the timer switches off.

or at least I think so. Still recovering from christmas!

Stats like that are usually programmable stats, and you therefore do not connect to a time clock anyway.

Fancy stats with a screen are more often than not battery powered with volt free contacts, or if they are mains they will have seperate terminals for the L+N and then a a volt free contact.
