That suggests you are on an 8M DSL max type package, where the speed is dependent on your line characteristics (length/quality).  The speed is also the speed to a test server, so not just testing your copper cable to the exchange, but the IP backbone of the ISP and the general internet - If you try it again at 3 in the morning you may find it has increased!

What about sitting in the van having a sarnie and connecting via an open wireless network in the neighbourhood?

And further to this, do they know I'm accessing via their network? I ask because I usually only get about ten minutes and then lose the connection. This isn't because of a weak signal, I get the full five bars on the TWO open networks available at this location, whichever one I'm using just closes down.

Saves me the £2 a day on my T-mobile pay-as-you-go dongle! (Use it on my little Asus notebook I carry with me.)

Well all my neighbours are selfish gits! When we moved a few weeks back I had no net connection, so I thought I'd try out the neghbour's. I had seven LANs in range, all of which were secure. One which was bordeline was unsecured but never manged to connect to it.
Now the nice people in the next block when we go to Egypt.....

I don't think they can tell, unless they have some sort of software that specifically tracks free-loaders. I suppose you could go into the router settings and see what IP addresses are connected to it?

Just seemed strange, 'cos I thought the router stayed open all the time.

Perhaps, as you say, they have software that bats you out of field. Just funny that the two open networks are always there when I fire up but it always happens after about ten minutes.

They may have porn filters which shut it down  Grin

Amazed so many of you claim to have 8Mbps. Is that because there isn't a 2 or 4 or 5 Mbps button?

The 8MBps option was meant to include anything above the 512 in my opinion, basically any of the ADSL max type packages.  It obviously varies hugely from person to person.

in theory I have 8meg cable but that speed thing says I have 8.500 meg, they keep upgrading their customers though because when I signed up in sure it was 2 meg, then 4, now 8 and I think they are planning to get people signed up to 16 for an extra 2 quid if you have been with em for a while, pointless for me cos my lan port don't work and I am on the wireless side of my router Angry
