Nailing joist
Aug 16th, 2009, 9:52pm

Hi,

I've nailed down a 4x2 joist to timber wall plates sitting on sleeper walls. At two of the wall plates the joist did not sit on them, it sat about a quarter to half inch off them. I nailed the joist down by toenailing the nails into it and the wall plate. It seems pretty secure. I did wonder if over time the joist would try to pull away and spring up, or is what I've done quite normal? Perhaps the joist will reshape anyway after a while and stay in position even if the nails are removed.

I assume the gap is due to curved joists so If you pack the gap the floor won't be dead flat.

Won't be dead flat anyway, which is why it'll probably be OK. He's skew-nailed them so I doubt they'll move as long as he's used a bit of overkill on the length of nail.
