Failed d/g units...
Oct 28th, 2009, 9:07pm

Now this is a failed unit!

...

There are 32 of these in each window and there are TWO windows. EVERY unit has failed! There is another large window in the drawing room which has also failed. Oh, and a panel in the conservatory roof at 2910 x 570 has also failed. All by the same company, fitted six years ago. It also failed earlier this year!

Don't you just love them?

Never seen the like before. The sheer scale of the problem was gobsmacking.

The company was Dawley Glass of Telford. They'd been around for yonks and went belly-up a while back. They were a replacement window company, primarily upvc but (as here) doing timber windows as well, and used to have a good reputation for quality and reliability. Wonder when the rot set in? Probably when they started cutting corners to survive. It's a hell of a competitive business to be in, but no excuse for this sort of crap.

44mm section, 16mm units with a good 14mm for bead, but they'd PUTTIED the units in, which was lunacy. It's a severe exposure elevation and you can see where the putty has cracked.

I'll replace them all with gas-filled units and bead them in on sealant. There's at least two days work for two men there, though given the difficult access over the conservatory roof we're probably talking more like five man-days.

So much for cutting corners!

Are those really windows? Sorry, with all that wood, I thought that they were knotholes. Grin

They're both in the children's bedrooms. I think they're getting them used to the feel of a Young Offender's Institute.
