Skirting boards and doors
Jan 30th, 2010, 6:25pm

We are updating our house bit by bit and are hoping to put on new skirting boards, architrave and doors in the next year or so. We are in the process of decorating our childrens bedroom and were thinking of changing the white skirting boards and putting on pines ones now.  The question I wanted to ask was if we put these on now and changed the architrave maybe in a year would the colours be different. Doesn't pine darken with time.  We don't have the money to change everything at once and if we could do each room with the skirting boards and then do all the doors and architraves together it would be great and would spread the cost, but we don't want the pine to be all different shades.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

heeelllooo Miss Marble and welcome Smiley Smiley Smiley

yes they will tone down
if in direct sunlight you will notice a difference in around 6 months to a year
the colour change will be complete  in 2 to 4 years
but whatever happens if you apply timber in 6 month stages they will all eventualy catch up in coulour providing you treat them the same
the worst thing you can do its tone each new fix to fit the old as the later fixes will tone down to full antique colour plus the additional layers on top will darken even more

Miss Marble - have you actually priced the job of fixing the architraves at the same time as the skirting? The cost of architrave is only a couple of pounds a door, and a good chippie can do the job in about 30 minutes a door, including any filling to make good around the edges.

The biggest problem would be getting a chippie to do such a small job, most guys wouldn't consider it worth looking at, which is why it might be a good idea to get the doors done at the same time as the skirting. And quite apart from the actual cost, there could be some cutting-in required where the skirting meets the architrave.

If funds will stretch perhaps take a look at Oak venered mdf skirting instead of pine. Various profiles available.

Huge range here: http://www.skirtingboards.com
