Restoring fireplace tiles
Aug 15th, 2011, 8:35am

Hello,
We bought our house in Jan and have just removed a gas fire and surround, uncovering a 1920s tile fireplace! The tiles are what I think of as 'London Underground' tiles and are mid/dark green. We love it but they are quite chipped in places and have a few drill holes. Does anyone know of the best way to fill chips and holes and just generally restore them?

Thank you!

It's always best to retain the original features of a house, and the fact that you actually like and want to keep the tiles is a plus.

But I wouldn't attempt to "fill chips and holes and just generally restore them", because all you'll end up with is a fireplace that looks as if it's had the chips and holes filled.

Replace the damaged tiles. Take a look here... http://www.cravendunnill-jackfield.co.uk/

The company is local to me and before I retired from my business in conservation joinery I used them a lot (and pointed people in their direction) and found them incredibly friendly and helpful. Drill out a damaged tile and send them a piece to compare and match.  Smiley

That's definitely good advice.  You should take your time and do a good job.  Especially if you are living in a more ritzy place and working with NYC contractors. After all, a lot of people will be looking at your fire place.  It's often the centerpiece of room.  Also, I hear looking into some "fire resistant tile adhesive" to get your tiles on might not be a bad idea.  Good luck!
