Remove or cover over mirror tiles in bathroom?
Nov 27th, 2011, 4:19pm

Hi,
We have one wall in bathroom almost completely covered with mirror tiles. It's awful. Only the bottom 6inches have wall tiles matching the rest of the bathroom. I suspect that behind the mirror tiles are old wall tiles as that is the case with the rest of the room. Wall is solid.

I don't intend tiling this wall as the 3 other walls are fully tiled. Intend painting it and fixing a normal size mirror to the wall.

I think we have some possibilites:

a) Remove the mirror tiles and the underlying wall tiles back to the plaster ready to paint. But we may find plaster is badly damaged.

b) Remove the mirror tiles exposing the old wall tiles (hideous green so they can't be left exposed).

c) Leave the mirror tiles in place but cover them with, say, Aquapanel.

Questions:
Would Aquapanel be a suitable material to cover the wall in either (b) or (c)?

Can Aquapanel be glued to the old wall tiles?
Can Aquapanel be glued to the mirror tiles?
Would it need skimming like plasterboard before painting?

Any advice or other ideas gratefully received.

Thanks and regards,

Remove the mirror tiles and tile over the ones beneath to match rest of room.

If its a solid wall, I'd be tempted to remove all the tiles from the wall, make good with filler or re-plaster as appropriate, then decorate.

If it is a plasterboard or lath and plaster wall, you may well find that the tiles will drag the wall down with them.  I'd still be tempted to do this, bit be aware you may need to chuck some new plasterboard at it, then get it skimmed.

Thanks chaps.
Unfortunately, we don't want to tile that wall - haven't seen any tiles to match and not a great fan of tiles all around.
So, I''m going to try removing both sets of tiles back to the plaster - this is the finish I'd prefer to get.  I expect to find a sizable gap at the corners behind the tiles on the adjoining wall as the mirror tiles are tucked in behind them.  Then I'll have to disguise that gap somehow.
Many thanks .

Depending on the thickness of the Aqua panel, and sheet size, it can be glued, but NOT to mirror tiles,

Aqua panel is best screwed to the wall using the CORRECT aqua panel screws( water resistant) and the jointed with their tape, then a skim coat if you intend painting....   the screws can be positioned in the grount lines of the mirror tiles.....
