plan to remove cedar sidewall shingles and add 3/8 foam and siding.  WOULD IT BE A GOOD OR BAD PRACTICE TO APPLY TYVEK OR TYPAR?

3/8" of foam won't provide much insulation if that's your intention.

The correct foam for siding is called fan fold insulation. It is styrofoam insulation and less then 1/4" thick. When using this, your new siding should come out correctly on your brick mold!

unless of course you are talking about the following type of siding to replace the timber siding,

GRAND SIERRA SERIES: Grand Sierra is a 0.48 thickness vinyl siding that along witha 3/8" foam core applied backing



and CW, not it is not his intention, its across the pond codes of practice here, (U.S/Canada)

probably has either 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 studs, followed up with the  B.M and then the siding.....

the fan fold acts as the stop against the cold bridging....
