Wall Papering - Flakey Walls
Mar 2nd, 2012, 5:11pm

Just stripped one wall in a bedroom, ready to re-paper with new.

The paper came off pretty easy, but has taken quite a lot of paint with it.

What would the pro's do prior to re-hanging paper?

And in fact, for future reference, if I was to want to paint this wall, what would be the best thing to do?

I'd PVA it if wallpapering.

If you were to paint it then I'd get a plasterer in to give it a light skim coat. You'll be forever trying to fill in and make it smooth otherwise.

The paint was quite loose, so in the end I just used the sharp handheld paper stripper to strip most of the paint.  Then used two part filler to fill any gashes, sanded and painted with a mixture of whatever colours I had left over in the garage!  Ended up a kind of yellow mist colour!  Filled and sanded again until I was happy with the finish, and then papered over the top!

Kind of a practice thing with the filling and painting, but I do also like to paper onto paint rather than directly to the wall, and I am not keen on PVA at all!

It can go tacky again with a little moisture or humidity.  I have seen a couple people loose a wall of tiles due to it's use, so always think it better to just steer clear!  Some watered down paint does the trick for me!

Also seen someone plaster a ceiling after using it and the plaster could be peeled off!

I think you either love it or hate it!
