Tiling around the worktop

When you tile above a worktop, is it usual to use a tile spacer between the worktop and tile, and grout this?  Or do you sit the tile directly on the worktop and run a bead of silicon around?

just a gap, then sealant!!! allows for a bit of movement without making cracks appear!!
