Hi there, I need to prep my window frames - old gloss paint needs rubbing down before I repaint. Trouble is they have a fiddly bar arrangement down one side (about 28inches long) - I dare say you know what I mean - operated by the handle which levers the bar into two 'hook' type things top and bottom. Supposed to seal the window properly shut but probably stopped working about 1920! Consequently, cold and draughty, but hey ho. Building is 16c and Grade 2 listed so got to put up with it - and wouldn't change them anyway. I was hoping there might be an easy way of rubbing them down (I have ten to do), anyone any ideas or experience with these? Also, anyone know what they'd be made of? They go rusty, so not aluminium, obviously, and I think the handles must be brass. Sorry, another thing - I hear gloss paint is going to be discontinued in the next few years. Is this true? If so, can I repaint over oil-based gloss (windows, doors, etc) with the water-based gloss I presume will be replacing it? Any advice welcome.
