Multifuel stove

I was going to buy a multifuel stove second hand abut have discovered that all stoves fitted must now meet Defra standards. So I'll have to buy a new one, presumably.

What I find unclear is how the Defra rules on pollution etc relate to those who already have them? My son has one fitted about 15 years ago, operating largely on smokeless fuel in a clean air zone. You can use some Defra stoves in these areas - how about old ones?

Legislation is not usually retrospective and these rules only apply to new installations. So your son is OK but you would need to check to see if your stove was compliant. No doubt the fitters would want to sell you a new stove. We have a Clearview and whilst it burns cleanly whilst hot it smokes like a chimney getting up to temperature. In my view wood burners are not suitable for built up areas because even the best smell pretty badly at times.
