confused by old style wiring

Hi, the wiring in my house is very old. I need to fit a new pull-style light switch in the bathroom. I took off the old fitting and found 4 red wires coming out of the ceiling. Two of these go to one connector on the fitting and two go to another connector. One of the wires has a purple and yellow thread coming out of it - I don't know if this is significant. My question is: how do I connect these 4 red wires to the new fitting, which is expecting red, black and earth wires.
Thanks
David
