Opening chimney for electric stove
Sep 30th, 2016, 5:14pm

We have just removed our old gas fire and opened up the old fireplace. We want to put in an electric stove there.(Not something we use often hence not wanting gas or wood)  What would we need to do to the chimney? We were going to plasterboard around the inside of the fireplace and over the opening coming down from chimney to block out the cold. Do we need to cap off the chimney? Leave air gaps? Any advice gratefully received!

You will need to provide a source of ventilation where you board over the chimney and then fit a cowl to the chimney to keep the weather and birds out. If you search for "disused chimney cowls" you should find one that will suit your existing chimney pot. This is important because not ventilating the chimney can cause damp patches to appear on the wall.

You may want to drop a liner down the flue for an extract fan.
