May 10th, 2018, 11:18pm

Hi
Had light socket single switch which was connected up wrong and blew in the fuse box, knocking all lights throughout the house out, changed fuse got  light.I've just had kitchen fitted I've just noticed(( painfully))that the hob extractor metal casing is live..how???it's goes into same fuse spur as previous fan did....and didn't get shock previously,I've pulled fuse from spur and switched off the same socket but still live...
Could some fine person point me in rgt direction...

Screwed to the wall and gone through a buried cable?

Is the body of the extractor definitely earthed?

If it's used the same holes then I'd guess either it's faulty or wired in wrong

This is live though even when fuse is out of the spur and obviously switched off, just taken fuse from main board, and taken hood off,all wires seem fine can't locate break...driving me up wall!!!!!
Thanks for reply..
As I've now put main fuse back on and lights are on how dangerous is this to leave over wines???

Sorry, id missed that bit in yiur original post.  If you pull each fuse / switch off each breaker in turn, can you work out which circuit is making it live?

My money is still on a screw through a wire.  Surprised it hasn't tripped something though

Did they do earth tests when they fitted it?

Most hoods are double insulated these days.

The hood has either come into contact with a live part (drilled cable in wall for example), or is faulty.

If you have just had it all professionally fitted get the kitchen fitter back.

If you know how to use a multi meter I would disconnect the supply to the hood and check if the metalwork is still live (indicating a mounting screw must be the cause).

Also check the resistance between  the hood live wire and metal work (indicating an internal fault on the hood).

The hood should be double insulated (no need for earth) but if not and there is an earth wire check that earth at the junction box connects back to earth where it comes into the house - in case this is an induced voltage (eg capacitive coupling between live and earth).

These tests won't guarantee to find the fault - for that you may need specialist test kit.
