Replacing independant ceiling lights
May 30th, 2018, 3:48pm

Hello, can someone please help?

Tried to replace 2 ceiling lights in living room which have independant switches but dont understand the wiring. The new light fittings only have room for 2 wires each, so what do i do?

Photo 1 - new fitting containing 2 wires; 1 black, 1 blue
Photo 2 - 1st ceiling fitting - 2 wires - 1 black - 1 red
Photo 3 - 2nd ceiling fitting 5 wires - 1 black - 2 red - 1 blue - 1 yellow/green

Also, new fittings have metal brackets/fixings.

We would be guessing to be honest.  There are too many different possible combinations.

We would need to see behind the switches and the other light fitting too.

Incidentally, you have no earth in those cables, but it does look to be constructed with steel conduit, and if the steel conduit is intact, that would be providing an earth, and a fly lead should be attached to the metal box to earth your light fitting.  This should be verified though - Having a metal light fitting with no earth is dangerous.

In all honestly, I think an electrician would be your best bet here... Sad
