Painting over bathroom paint
Oct 15th, 2018, 12:00am

Next room on the hitlist is the bathroom, which is painted with a soft sheen bathroom paint.  What do I need to do to this to paint over it?  I'm guessing it maybe a latex based paint but not 100% sure.  It's kind of rubbery and in places where it has been chipped it can be peeled a bit like pulling dried wood glue from your fingers (something  I've always found oddly satisfying!)

I'm guessing that it is too shiny to just throw a coat of emulsion onto, but not sure it would sand particularly nicely either

If it's pealing off easily you could possibly strip it off to be on the safe side. Otherwise I think you would need to apply a coat of either Zinsser bin or diluted oil based wood undercoat. I would try a small area first just in case it reacts with the paint.

It doesn't peel easily, it comes off in fingernail sized bits if you pick at it.

Don't know what I was thinking painting the walls in soft sheen paint.  Guess I must have been drunk  Grin

I'll give the zinsser a try.  Thanks dude Smiley

+1 to Zinsser.

Someone recommended it to me for use over a shower where the paint was getting wet and kept peeling off. Zinsser seems to be much more resistant than the brand name emulsions I tried before.

+2 for Zinsser.  Their stuff is great and their website has a host of information and guides about painting over difficult surfaces.
