Window cement loose
May 14th, 2021, 5:19pm

I have a couple of pieces of cement come loose from when the window was replaced around 15yrs ago. I was going to remove and re-do the cement, but not to sure if I should either primer/seal the red brick with water or SBR before going ahead.
My question is would spraying with water first be good enough as buying 2.5lts SBR for such small job and not used again, and would I need to use some kind of additive to the sharp sand and cement mix to help with adhesion, as it quite a chunk on its own?

Appreciate any info, Thanks

You shouldn’t need an adhesive or sealer for this. I’d wet the area with water then leave it until the bricks are damp but not showing any water. Then I’d build up the hole slowly, buttering it onto the brick, allowing each layer to go stiff (firm enough so you can’t press your finger into it) before applying the next. You could do that with builders sand rather than sharp and use a 1:4 mix. The problem with filling it in one go is that it has a tendency to slump which will break the bond with the brick.
