Remove ugly concrete blocks from wall
Jun 12th, 2021, 1:28pm

Hi. We have two lengths of concrete attached to the front of our house which used to have metal hooks running along it (I think they were originally intended to make a frame for climbing plants like runner beans).
I managed to saw through the metal hooks with a saw but have no idea how to get rid of the blocks. They are such an eyesore. Any suggestions on the best way to remove them? I was going to ask a handyman to do the job, but wanted an opinion on this first. I plan to cover the scar left on the wall with two lengths or wooden battens, and then mount a wooden trellis on that, as it’s a large space of wall. Any advice would be appreciated.

This is a very odd way to fix hooks to a wall and it’s possible the hooks screwed through the concrete and fixed it to the wall. However I doubt you could have unscrewed them as they look rusted in place. The concrete has steel reinforcing rods which may make things more difficult but I’d start at one end and chip away the concrete, ideally with a small SDS breaker, until I found the first fixing. Then it’s a case of a lot more chipping away or you maybe able to speed up the process and use an angle grinder to cut the concrete around the fixings.

The way the concrete has started to crumble, it may well break apart quite easily
