Window frame repair
Dec 7th, 2021, 5:15pm

I jacked in my job and have gone self employed, and people keep asking me to do handyman stuff instead of what I'm actually wanting to do, but hey it's money!

Not sure what to do with this one though.  I've been asked to repair a shop windowsill.  It's a curved window and the sill is made in several sections and the ends have rotted where the joins are.  I'm quite happy with the woodwork side of it, but what should i do about painting it at this time of year?  It's got to be gloss white, so normally i would just chuck some dulux oil based white gloss on it, but that says it needs to be over 10 degrees to apply it.  Can i get away with it when it's colder by adding some dryers to the paint?  Or is there a paint that would be ok to use when it's colder?

You could add some terabine if it’s an oil based paint to speed up the drying process but I’d put them off if I could and do when the weather has improved.

Yes, it will be dulux weathershield oil based gloss.  Looking like we're not going to have any dry weather in the next few weeks either, so that'll put a stop to it.

cheers dude Smiley

My quote was too high.  they don't want it repairing properly, they just want it spooned full of filler and 1 coat of paint, no primer or undercoat.  A job for someone else, I don't want to get involved!!  Grin

When I first started out self employed I was asked to make a bookcase for a dining room. All the furniture in the room was oak but they didn’t want to go to the expense of oak and wanted it in pine. Against my better judgment I made it for them and it looked ok in the room, but a week or so later I get a call that they don’t like it and wanted their money back. It was a costly learning experience but it taught me it was better to walk away from any job, or customer, I wasn’t happy with.

Turned down another one this week too.  someone asked me to rebuild their garden wall - concrete block, 8 foot high and about 50 foot long that had been blown down a few weeks back.  I've built my own shed, and i'll be doing a few other bits for myself over the next year or 2.  but i know what my block laying is like, and haven't got the confidence that i'd be able to do it well enough to charge for.
