Title: How on earth do I tighten my toilet seat up?
Post by Barry on Jun 28th, 2011, 5:56pm

Hi. I'm new here and I really hope you can help me. I had a full bathroom installed by B&Q 3 years ago and we chose they lovely compact ROSSINI toilet with CP seat as we have a small separate toilet next to the bathroom. The seat fittings have become so lose I fear it is going to detach very soon but I cannot see how they can be tightened as the whole pan is a sealed unit. I looks like the whole toilet will need to be dismantled to get the pan out and tighten the seat from underneath. Have I got this wrong and is there an easy way of fixing this very annoying problem?

Here's a picture of the toilet:

And here's a picture of the pan:

It's making my brain itch  :(

Thanks

Barry

I have managed to lift the seat off the hinges revealing the 2 mounting posts.

A close up of the one on the right shows that they will rotate (spin round) but I cannot find a way of tightening them from the top.

I have tried gently lifting them but they won't budge. They don't appear to come apart either. To my untrained eye it looks like they are held in place with screws from underneath but as I admit, my eye is untrained here.

will the posts turn if you hold the base allowing you to remove the post then lift off the base to give access to the fixing screws ?

just a suggestion as i have never seeen a toilet of that style that you can get to the screws from below.

Does the cover plate lift up or unscrew.

Looks a bit like these...

Will the chrome cap slide up the post?

Sometimes the chrome part "snaps-on" to the part which fixes to the pan.... but if I suggest trying to lever it off it will turn out to be another  type and I'll get the blame when it all goes pear shape.

other types have a little allen key..

It slides up CW and there's a screw underneath to tighten the bracket.  :D

I am pleased to say that thanks to your help I have managed to tighten the fixings. The chrome part is a snap on and eventually came off revealing the screws underneath,. It took some effort and I guess I wasn't trying hard enough for fear of causing damage.

So a big thank you to all who offered advice. I owe you one.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I have the same issue with the toliet unit and have removed the seat. Attached to the 2 hinges, I still have  the part the toilet seat was connected to - how is this removed before I can lift the cover.

Any assistance is appreciated - thanks.

For further clarification the previous post was confusing....

I have hinges still attached to the mounting posts - how to remove the hinges before I can lift the cover and tighten the unit.

Thanks

Hi, the toilet is identical model to that in the pictures, however, the pictures either show the entire toilet with seat pan attached or just the mounting post and cover.

In my case I've managed to remove the toilet seat, and am left with hinges attached to the mounting post and cover still in place. I need to know how to remove the hinges so that then the cover can be lifted over the mounting posts.

Thanks

The original toilet seat and lid are all connected by the same hinge, you normally have to remove it all as a one piece unit...so am unsure of the way you have the seat off, but lid still attached:

depending upon seat brand, some have push in type buttons to the inner edges of the hinges, and then just pull up, and/or some just pull off with a sharp but even tug up off the posts:

These pictures show the current status i.e. the hinges still attached to the mounting posts. I don't know how to remove the hinges so that the cover can be lifted over the mounting posts to tighten the fixing.

You lift the cover plate and turn it anti clockwise to get at the screw.

eg lift the cover up the mounting post just enough so it can be swung out of the way. It doesn't have to be lifted off the mounting posts totally.

Hi Chaps, thank you very much. The cover was very tight and I gradually managed to ease it up to tighten the screw underneath.

I've also managed to put the unit back together again, the seat isn't 100% in correct positon as it's very tricky to get this right, but nonetheless, it's a million times better than how it was.

Once again - thanks, I'm pleased with your help I've accomplished a DIY job!!!

Cheers

I have to say that I think this thread has helped me a lot as well. Our toilet has gradually been becoming more loose over the past few months and my husband and I had no idea how to fix it. I'm at work right now, so I can't try these solutions, but I think we'll be able to fix it with this information! One step closer to finishing up our bathroom... Thank you!
