Title: oil tank installation
Post by runninwata on Jun 29th, 2005, 9:08pm

hi guys, some advice please
i am currently looking at a job for installing a new tank to a new property
The owner of the property wants the tank situated about 10m from the property what would be an acceptable method of burying the oil supply line to the boiler??. we had thought of running it through a 4" ug drain pipe but do not know if this would satisfy the regulations.

thanks in advance

Being a sparky, I know bugger all about the regs.......BUT

All i see is copper pipe sleeved (in manufacturer) in white PVC.  This is clipped diect to walls, and buried in the soil.

I expect, as with our lecky cables, you should bury in a bed of sand, and use warning tape.

Here comes the plumbers advice......

For a sparkie that was dam good  ;D ;D

10mm plastic coated pipe covered in sand, fire valve has to be positioned external to the building with a capilary tube going to the boiler or a remote.

No there is a special pump system you can get called a "Tigerloop" or similar.

The building regs are quite complex for tank installation. You sometimes need "double bunded" tanks.

The supply pipe that is coated in white pvc does it have a name ?? and is it readily available at merchants?? we are to install the tank and the supply line to  the boiler  which is already installed and  to current regs.
the customer is having gleaner oils commission the installation so we have to do it right :o

cheers

Yes plastic coated copper pipe is available from the plumbers merchants.

Thing to remember is the fire valve, must be outside the building where the pipe enters, with either a phile or remote shut off depending on length to the boiler once you get inside

And you must not use solder fittings on the oil line, they should be compression.

Oil tank, if plastic, must be supported across its entire base and meet the location requirements.

I always specify bunded tanks
