Title: Crazed dog
Post by woodsmith on May 6th, 2006, 7:17am

I'm just wondering if there are any animal psychologists out there :-/

I have a border collie, she is about the most wolf-like dog I have ever seen ;) ;D

Anyway the problem is; I get my Paslode out and she dashes into the pond and runs up and down in the mud, very smelly and she won't take a bath after ::) not nice :(

If I stop her going in the pond, she attacks the Paslode with a vengeance. While I'm using it, so not exactly the safest use of a nail gun.

Anyone got any ideas, why the pond?

Well since I was expelled from doggy classes (with my Doberman) a few years back, I think I'm not the best person to offer advice  :-/

Molly was such a handful when she was young, that we took her to a dog trainer, they kept her for a week, but she came out worse than she went in :-/

They said she was the cleverest dog they had seen, she knew what you wanted her to do, she just didn't want to be obedient :-/

Typical teenage girl ::)

buy Molly her own Paslode ya "cheapskate"..... ;D ;D ;D...

(only kidding)..........

it could be the colour (brightness of the Orange) as dogs see colours different to humans,

collies are always quite highly strung if not worked....(see own Paslode ..again).. they need to be kept stimulated..... thats one of the reasons i stopped having Collies as pets... not the time needed to keep them occupied.....

as for the pond, if a dog feels threatened in anyway shape or form, they need to "hide!!" and the best way to hide  for a dog is to cover your scent.. hence the smelly mud!!  or cow dung is another dog favorite!!! (also helps them, if a country dog go "un-noticed" in another dogs territory!!)

not a great lover of live in dog training, as it really needs to be interaction with the owner and the dog concerned to be able to train the pair as Alpha, and subversant animal!
dog (pet- not working) training is all about getting the dog to be subversant to the MAIN owner/handler, and quite a bit of the time it is down to how the owner and the dog interact together... who's boss and who is not....
Many years ago, when living right on the coast, and having the time to have more than one dog, i used to help out at the 2 local dog training Societies, and so often it was 60-80% of the time how the owners responded to /commanded the dogs!!!!!

but like i stated earlier,Collies are such clever ACTIVE dogs, the need constant stimuli to stop them basically getting bored!!!!

p.s, still buy Mollie her own nail gun!!!! ;D( hang on that could be it,...she reckons you should have bought a Senco/Ace & K AIR nailer, and shes trying to get you to dump the old  hissy Passy!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D)

Just make a suitable container to put your dog in when using the passy, thats what I do......

.......Or fill the pond in and get your hammer out ;D

;D  They said he was the worst behaved dog they'd ever come across!  They even gave me my money back  ;D

I didn't think he was too bad, perhaps it was when he attacked the instructor that they thought he'd have to go?  :-/

A mate of mine had a border collie (Blue Merle?) many years ago and I remember that was a handful.  It was always active and 'on the go'.  It always had that wild-eyed look, not a brilliant pet as I remember.

It used to jump his garden gate and be gone all day some days, luckily he lived near the Rye in High Wycombe (huge public park with river) so presumably he was happy as larry out there.

That is the main trouble witha working dog!! it is breed into them, .. the just have to be active!! when i had a pair of Border Collies (Raq & Kiz) they used to end up having a good 4 miles worth of walks each day!!!(oh those were the days, plenty of time!!) and that was with out the use of the looooooonnng garden we had at the time for them to play in!!

Jason thats one hell of a big cup :o

;) ;D

Wolf it must be the noise, she has started to run in the pond when I get the hammer out :-/

She was telling me yesterday she is not so much a border collie as a bored collie ::)

She has dozens of toys, but I hadn't thought of getting her her own Paslode  :-/ once she becomes familiar with its operation she will probably lose the fear, good idea ::) ;D

;D I'm sure you've come up with worse than that before ::) ;D

Tried giving her the Paslode but no good, she tells me she has no opposable thumb ::)

I'm just about to take her up to the woods where she can chase rabbits and wear herself out

Hopefully!!!!
i once covered 13 miles with mine, and i am not sure who was more knackered!! them or me!! (still miss the long walks though!!.. and more so the dogs! but age waits for nothing!! :-/)

Thats the hardest thing about having a pet, seeing them age so quickly :(

Still, Molly saw 3 rabbits, one ran out almost between her legs :o but she still managed not to catch it ::) fortunately for me ;D

Title: Re: Crazed dog
Post by WOLF on May 7th, 2006, 11:40am

now come on W/S.. just who is the more knackered , Molly or your good self!!!! ;D ;D................

one of my Collies used to chase Squirrels... nightmare when she finally got one!! YUCK!!! :-[ :'( :'( :'( :'(

but that is nature!!! along with the aging process... our Bess is definately going to be the last dog we have..... as she is going to be lucky to see out the full year my missus does not want the heart ache again..after this one!!

may be i can make a timber dog!!! .. no feeding , watering!!!  no walking or vets bills (grief!!!)  but plenty of "BARK"ing!!!!!  ;D ;D

I know where I can lay my hands on some Dogwood ;) and no jokes about leaving the bark on ;)

Best dog I had for walking was my Bulldog, the furthest he would venture was the end of my drive, when he was young he would go a bit further then just give up, it's no fun carrying a 60lbs bulldog up the road.

That's terrible! You should have trained him to get as far as the pub..........

I have a great solution for you - let's swap nailing tools and your problem will be solved.

I have your paslode nailing gun.

You have my hammer.

Happy dog, happy me!!

Sorry bik but the dog is spooked by an ordinary hammer these days

This looked a good idea so I thought, I know I'll put my ear defenders on Molly, take a picture and post it here so you can all have a laugh.

Anyway,  she didn't want to wear them.

The doctor said the stitches will come out in a few weeks and the scarring won't be too noticeable. ::) ;D ;D

The ear defenders should be the easy bit, its the safety glasses, high vis vest and those four little steel capped booties that are a job to get them to wear ;D ;D ;D

Molly could be the get-away driver, and she is working on the evil stare to ward off parking wardens ;D

Title: Re: Crazed dog
Post by WOLF on Jun 1st, 2006, 2:48pm

our mutt is never awake long enough to "stare" out any one these days, if she met a parking warden, it would be to clamp the lazy dawg!!!!

we are thinking of renaming her "ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzz"
;D ;D
