Title: Laminate Flooring

Hi,

Hope someone can help. I want to lay a laminate floor in my kitchen. The current floor covering is Lino on a concrete base. Can I use the Lino as the base layer and just lay the laminate ontop ? or do I have to remove the Lino and lay a moisture barrier and padding.
Common sense suggests that the lino probably already serves this purpose.

heeelllooo bod and welcome ;D ;D ;)

idealy you should have underlay for moisture protection
noise reduction and to help iron out slight deviations in the floor [1mm or so]

i have laid 2 floors on concrete and thermoplastic tiles in a kitchen and a wooden box room floor the box rooms a bit noisy but the kitchens fine after 5 years
it happend when the customer refused to by a second roll of underlay

It does depend how level the existing floor is but for the small cost I'd put a foam underlay down. Although lino is slightly compressible, its nothing like as compressible as foam, and won't take up the slight undulations in the same way.

Plus you would probably void any warranty on the flooring.

Some types of laminate flooring are flipping slippy when wet and not ideal for a kitchen IMHO.

Hi Bod, and welcome to this here forum,
i am in total agreement with the others on this, you can if you really want to put the Lam flooring on to the Lino, but, it will not have the give or forgiving nature of an closed cell foam underlay!
personally for the price of a roll or 2 i'd always recommend the underlay

if it is sound id still leave the lino in place!
