hi there,
I've just bought a d/g GRP door to replace my front door but after reading the fiiting instructions am a little confused.... :-?
I have fitted a standard d/g door which has a casement all the was round adn thus fairly easy to install, however this GRP door does not have the casement all the way round, the bottom section is not there!!!
The base of the door is approx 3-4cm short of the casing so if fitted there would be a gap along the bottom. Are the two sides supposed to be trimed? but then it would be too short for the opening?? How does the sil attach.
Any advice greatly appreciated

Sounds odd to me but then i dont do plastic ;D . 30 - 40mm sounds like the depth of a plastic cill so does the plastic cill fit between the two side stiles and get fixed from the outside of the stiles into the cill ?
Just a guess .

ah, i was thinking that also, but the sil is the same width as whole frame. Also if the cill did in between the stiles the total height woudl be 35mm short of what door is to fit, ie the size of the cill....

like JFC, i dont touch grp/placcy doors,but we will try all we can to assist!

Do you need to fit a threshold strip to the cill?

They are usually about 25-30mm :-/

thanks for all your replies chaps, will try and post some pics and the instructions. I do have an extra part that may be the threshold but not really sure how it would fit. hopefully the pics may be of use!!!!

I'm afraid the instructions pic is poor, and it is on the only section on the whole leaflet that mentions fitting a GRP door.

hope someone can fathom it out!!!

Screw the cill to the jambs,

fit the door and frame

then fit the threshold strip by screwing it into the cill.

I'd apply a bead of glazing silicon under the threshold strip.

cheers woodsmith. sounds simple enough. feel abit dumb now :o

Just feel that when entering and exiting there will be a bit of a lip to trip on.

i agree W/S , but i would apply a bead of a mastic to the front and back of the cill prior to attatching to stop any water from wicking through!!

Good idea ;D

As for the lip it would be possible to fit a low level "roll over" threshold but as these are only 15mm high the door jambs would need cutting down, with a very square cut.

Then the frame would be short and you would need to set it on a thicker bed of mortar.

PS you will probably need to set the cill on a mortar bed anyway, these cills have little strength and need to be fully supported across the width.

cheers... will be having ago on monday. Do these door have any adjustment when fitted, they just have standard hinges unlike a standard uvpc door... Or is a case of getting the frame absolutely plumb.

i recall these type of threshold strips, screwed to a strip of hardwood (with plenty of mastic between-again to stop wicking-hence drip lip section to face!) then sat on a thin bed of mortar with a section of damp proofing between the timber and mortar!!

i have also recalled seeing this sort of timber/ally section atttached direct to the frame prior to installation, then the whole affair just slid in to place, frame afixed then a builder premium mastic applied all round!!

sound about right to you W/S??

usually use thin timber packers at the fixing points, above and below each fixing, and remember to fill out under the frame/threshold to stop any sagging!!

Like JFC and yourself I must admit to never fitting a GRP door but it sounds pretty good to me. I prefer to fit the threshold strip last then there is no chance of the sealant being disturbed

I have used the roll over threshold strips though ::) ;D

the main problem I've found with them is that the door has to fit perfectly, 1/8" out ( see I've gone specially Imperial for you ;)) and they don't work. Plus I think you still need a weather bar.
