Title: Thicknesser / Planer Post by bik038 on Sep 14th, 2006, 4:43pm Good afternoon all! I have just had an Oak tree milled and am waiting for it to season nicely (hopefully!) before planing / thicknessing the timber. As such I'm looking to buy a planer thicknesser for this purpose. Of course it will take at least a year to season the oak, but that doesn't mean I won't be able to persuade the wife that it's an essential purchase now... ::) Any suggestions / advice / warnings?! I haven't thought too much about budget yet but about £400 ish is about the most I'd be willing to pay. The dimensions of the wood likely to go through it would be anything from 1"x6" to 3" x 12" (but I appreciate that a 12" thicknesser is probably well out of my financial league!) Another thing - would it be worth buying one second hand (and can anyone suggest any reputable shops for such a thing to avoid the risks of ebay purchases!) and is this the kind of kit you can hire?? Thanks! Gary |

Title: Re: Thicknesser / Planer Post by woodsmith on Sep 15th, 2006, 11:55pm You could look at the SIP too; http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/Product.asp?iProductID=6600 but these are only hobby machines, you may be better off managing with a dedicated thicknesser or finding someone who would be willing to put your oak through their machines for you. |

Title: Re: Thicknesser / Planer Post by jasonB on Sep 16th, 2006, 7:51am Have you thought of leaving the decking with a sawn finish so that it is "non-slip" I've just done the decking over my pond filter with green larch that I had sawn to 32mm thick. Will depend on how consistant your board thickness is. Jason |
