Title: oooooohhhhhh bu66er guess what was wrong
Post by big_all on Oct 20th, 2006, 5:05pm

:-? :-? :-? recently whilst setting up my dewalt 742 flip saw i was having no end of trouble getting the blade dead square [and to stay there]

checked the metalwork square on a strait edge [draw a line flip it over ]lines up perfectly ;D ;D

rips a bit off wood half length flipsover rip the other half
where the rips meet a tiny mismatch in surface as in top off one half a few thow backand the bottom of the other a few thow back now not a lot but doubled at the join

ok no probs get the square out check alignment no visible light between blade and square :-? :-?

mmmmmmmmm :o  ok wipe all surfaces of the saw the blade and square  check square for accuracy on strait edge  ---perfect ;D

check on blade perfect  ;D ;D ;D ;D

check cut wood still wrong :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

guess what was wrong  :o :o :o :o :o

well done that man

my son had dropped the square it was still square but had a dented corner he tried rubbing it with emmery paper but no good so he gave it a couple of seconds on the belt sander :-[ :-[ :-[

so as i  checked the external [now sanded edge ]to set up it was fine but wrong and when i try the internal they aint square ;D ;D

$39.99 inc postage to UK so thats just between £20-25 but I was unlucky and got clobbered for £3.30 import duty and £4.00 for the post ofice to collect the duty.

Expect you are going to be spending the day draw filing the square back to 90 degrees ;)

i don't know if you can still obtain them from anywhere but i was given an engineers plate square many many years ago, came in a box for protection (not that it needs it)   its a small 6" bladed engineers square mounted on a ground plate(with 2 corners at 90 deg checked and marked) and  with a 1½ upstand to one side so that it can measure/set up a plate/blade and fence all in one go!  weighs in at about 2-3lb and is nice and accurate... over the time i've had a few bods try and "borrow" it!     >:(... but it does not leave the workshop!

saves belt sanding kids!!!!!

apparently the engineer that set up my old workshop toys now relys on a digital/laser jobbie!!! >:( :( :( :(

guy i know is setting up a new workshop

the sheet saw bevel angle is set by an electric motor in .1 degree increments

one thing has just come to mind, the .1 increments means you cant set 1/4 or 1/3 degree settings

thats not a lot of money if its accurate  i always recon call the dollars £s to allow for other charges ;D

to be honest i think i will invest in a complete set of metalwork and try squares as i am getting fag paper differences between half the squares not a lot i know but when your clamping up furniture or frames it can knock them out by a couple of mm over the diagonals

thats sort of what i want to do keep all the accurate stuff under lock and key  and only use it when high accuracy is required

i wonder if theres a manual fine adjustment with perhaps a central neutral "0" position and set clicks for 1/32"  !!!!

hes probably spent more money on the one tool than i have on all mine

his is a "cheap" one. Aparantly. The scribing blade has to be raised manually

dont want to discourage him wolf as he is 15 isnt realy all that interested in wood work  :-[

and whilst i realy appreciate things staying the same as i left them 8-)

it would make me extremly happy and proud if he took up the tools not nesseseraly as a trade but to be competent to use them on his own for his use even as a hobby or to help me on tasks where 2 heads are worth more than the sum total off the parts ;D

Having used a panel saw with a digital read-out for more than 5 years (mine's the not so cheap one with the power rise and fall on the scorer and the main blade) for those relatively rare occasions when you need to do a mitre cut 0.1 degrees happens to be a tad more accurate than the scale on the front of an ordinary tilt-arbor sawbench or chop saw. When you think about it most mitre cuts are generally either in full or 0.5 degree amounts, certainly almost any frame with 3 to 12 sides works out that way with the exception of 7 and 11 siders (really useful, those). But in any case I've never been asked to make a frame with more than 8 sides.....

totally agree, .1 of a degree is pointless

being a carpenter 1mm is good enough  :)
