Title: Re: extension collets Post by WOLF on Oct 25th, 2006, 3:50pm You should find that these ones are the best there is Big_al, and they are made by CMT, ..originally they made them for the DW625 Router, and then Trend started buying them from CMT, now CMT do a replica of the DW625, so produce them under their own Brand name, hence the same item for a lot less! , i actually own 2 of these little babies, (save having to swap them out!!!!) the link!!! http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-CMT-Router-Collet-Extension-29824.htm hope this helps! and if not in stock, try any one that stocks CMT stuff!!!! |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by woodsmith on Oct 25th, 2006, 6:27pm I've had rave reports about the Extreme extensions, they are expensive but make bit changing in the router table a lot easier, but at a price. I've just bought a Trend extension but it's the same price as the Extreme, it has the same locking mechanism as fitted to the DW625 rather than a simple collet as fitted to the CMT, hence the price. |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by woodsmith on Oct 25th, 2006, 10:06pm Alan, this is the product; http://www.toolshopdirect.co.uk/trend/product/Woodworking+Accessories/Collets/Collet+Extension/CE%252f127127 I got mine at a tool show and paid about £35 I think, if I had to pay this sort of price (£50) I would have gone for the Extreme. |

I am perplexed W/S, my CMT collet extensions are identical in engraved shank serial/part number to my OFFICIAL DEWALT one, and also my TREND version! (only trend has an 8MM adaptor at the end!) the only real difference i can find is that the CMT has a two flats nut which still clips to the multi split collet, whilst the DW/Trend have a full multi flat nut!!! |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by JFC on Oct 26th, 2006, 8:06am I use the xtreme xtension and now wouldnt have a router without one ! In fact ive just bought another one for the dedicated router in the Legacy ;D . One turn of the alan key and the cutter is locked in , better than messing around with a spanner ! Ive used it with raised panel cutters and it really does hold them in there . The xtreme is better for router tables and the Legacy but there is also the Eliminator chuck for hand held work . Try Roger here .....http://www.woodworkersworkshop.co.uk/ Expensive but you wont regret it ! |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by big_all on Oct 26th, 2006, 9:57am thanks jfc i do actualy like the look of that the simplicity and no more skint knuckles on the ironwork whilst trying to lock the collet under the table had a good look at it on the link you showed j f c is it avalable in britain !!! and at what cost ::) ::) ::) thanks for your help every one 8-) 8-) i knew you would come up trumps |

what a pillock ;D ;D ;D ;D i have just realised the rutlands is identical its just the word "xtreme" is a descriptive term where as is the "emblazened" product name on the other one :o :o ;) ok thanks for your help people have orderd it from rutlands and the weekly special wax colouring sticks http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/WAX%20KIT||WAX%20KIT@cAll@bAll|0|user|1,0,0,1|2|; |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by woodsmith on Oct 26th, 2006, 6:12pm Glad you got it sorted BA, I wish I'd bought one rather than the Trend. Wolf these are the collets from the Trend on the left and the CMT on the right. The CMT is a 1/4" extension the Trend is a 1/4" collet that fits into the 1/2" extension so it is not exactly like for like. |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by WOLF on Oct 26th, 2006, 7:30pm Strange W/S... very strange.... all of my collets , DW, Trend and CMT are identical to the left hand one!! ... i must admit, i have had them for quite a few years ( except the Trend one!!) :-? :-? :-? :-? must be one todays cost cutting excercise!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by big_all on Oct 26th, 2006, 11:53pm all my collets are like the l h side never seen s collet like the r h side one :) :) thank you very much for your imput keith wolf and jfc it just shows you that an extra few pounds that make an item look expensive can make it a great buy as the extra features are a god send and well worth the extra or should that be "xtra" ;D ;D |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by WOLF on Oct 27th, 2006, 12:48am the only thing that keeps me well away from things like the extreme collet extension, is the very fact they have a grub screw to retain the cutter, unless there is a leather washer (very much doubt!!!) there is always the ability of it working loose, and that is not taking into account of the fact the thing will rotate slightly out of balance!!! and the higher the rpm, the greater the eventual and hastened wear upon the routers bearings ............ but that is my personal opinion and experience!! only..... |
|
Title: Re: extension collets Post by big_all on Oct 27th, 2006, 10:15am pretty much my thoughts you double the unsupported shaft length you must more than double the wear on the bearing due to leverage you are also like you say wolf amplifying any slightly out of true running another concern i have is the base of the woolf craft router table i use is pressed steel and any extra leverage will cause it to move out of true[tipping the cutter by a tiny amount] so i am planning on covering the top with 12mm mdf which with help with larger cutters[bigger than the hole in the metal top] that have to go sub surface to line up screw the metal and mdf together in several places then secure the router with 3 or 4 no 6 or 8 countersunk machine bolts and spring washers throught the mdf steel and purpose made holes in the router base any critisism suggestions or comments welcome ;D ;D ;D ;) |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by big_all on Oct 28th, 2006, 12:12am ok [matt] wolf ;D ;D the collett arrived today very well engeneered and i mean great tollerences ;D ;D the grub screw isnt is an allen screw that tightens across the edge of the collet and pulls a wedge shaped hard metal peice with the footprint of a pencil with a shallow cut from the outside edge towards the centre a quarter to half turn of the allen[hex] key fully tightens the router cutter the extension is also very good fit into the machines collet they have comprehensive instructions about possible collet misalinement causing possible vibration and complete safety instructions and solutions |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by WOLF on Oct 28th, 2006, 6:35am OK, thanks for that Big_all, it may be something to look at/into....TA!!! |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by JFC on Oct 28th, 2006, 6:57pm You need to balance the xtension before you use it . I bought the xtension because i had a raised panel cutter come out and fly across the workshop . My own fault i didnt check the RPM after sticking the router in for a service . A normal collet has the "wobble" so this is even more so with a trend extended collet . The xtreme or Eliminator if balanced right gets rid of the wobble so no flying cutters . There are two rubber washers along with the wedge that hold the cutter in place . I take them out myself as they are a PITA but im told i shouldnt , not had a cutter come out yet . |

Title: Re: extension collets Post by big_all on Oct 28th, 2006, 7:51pm yep thanks J F C i am looking forward "playing " with the collet and getting it ballanced and useing it ::) ;) trouble is i have a part made bed unit and a fitted wardrobe double door frame assembly "cluttering" up the workshop :o :o :o |
|
Title: Re: extension collets Post by JFC on Oct 28th, 2006, 9:20pm Should only take ten mins and you may get it in one as i have done , i have 32 windows clutering up my workshop but i still make time to play ;D |
