Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by woodsmith on Nov 7th, 2006, 9:24pm Very similar to the Woodstar; http://www.toolpage.co.uk/viewproduct.cfm?ProductID=350&CatID=26 and the SIP; http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_info.php?pName=6%22-x-4%22-Planer-Thicknesser&products_id=235&osCsid=21584fbeee5b36babca01f1ca3b8ead0&cPath=10_85 Looks a good price but it is a DIY machine and I would take the reviews under advisement ;) |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by big_all on Nov 8th, 2006, 7:25am thanks kieth i appreciate it diy ::) i just dont have the room to convert loads of sawn timber :-[ :-[ :-[ it going to be for converting stock sizes when something thinner is required so instead off ripping with the flip saw [60 tooth freud pro blade]flipping the wood for up to 5 3/4" cuts and a light sand to finnish ::) ::) [did i just admit to using a saw without gaurds and riving knife in place ::) ::)] |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by JFC on Nov 9th, 2006, 9:49pm Any chance of a review when you get it ? My DIY P/T has been no end of trouble and the cutter block decided to eat the metal safety gaurd a few days ago while i was thicknessing some beading :o Looks like it could get me out of trouble as spares for mine are no longer availible im told >:(Α |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by WOLF on Nov 9th, 2006, 9:53pm what is the make and model of your P/T JFC! |

ok hardly touched it jfc but so far table seems parralel gives good clean cuts havent tried the thicknesser yet as you need to remove the fence to attach the dust extractor over the top if you dont do that the machine wont work as it has a microswitch of some sort operated by the "wedges " you push in to lock it this i am shure could be easily modified if reqired ::) ::) ::) any way if you want one get in now there was 60 left this time yesterday now theres only 20 :-[ :-[ :-[ will give a fuller review when i have used it in anger ::) ;) |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by JFC on Nov 10th, 2006, 8:39am Sounds better than mine already ! Its a Lutz europlan supplied by southern woodworking . I got hold of the MD of southern and he told me both companies had gone under . |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by big_all on Nov 10th, 2006, 10:12am just tried the thicknesser quickly you get the usual "fall" on and "fall" off if you dont support finnish a wee bit wavy but nothing a light sand wont cure seems to plane parralel but havent done an accurate check just a visual with a square ;D ;) |

it is as it happens hence the wink ;D one slight problem that i noticed earlier though is the fence is slightly hollow along part of its length ok top and bottom and either end >:( >:( looks like i will have to front it with 6mm ply or mdf to take out the hollow ::) to be honest if thats the only problem i have at that price i will be over the moon ;D ;D ;D ;) |
|
Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139 Post by JFC on Nov 10th, 2006, 6:09pm I hope it is the only problem as i bought the last one ;D Im wondering if i should sell the Lutz or take a sledge hammer to it :-/ |

keep it for spares or sell on e bay with the proviso that "some work and spare parts are required to get back to full working order and they may be hard to get" ::) ::) ;) have you removed the "key" from the extraction shute yet :o ;) offer now closed |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139[offer now closed] Post by JFC on Nov 10th, 2006, 7:44pm Its still working i just have a funny thing with machines . If i dont trust them i dont use them . Ill check it out tomorrow and make sure its all running properly but i wont be using it again . Im not sure how taking out the key would help :-? Wont you just end up with a thicknesser bed full of shavings ? |

yes sorry i should have said to play and check its ok ;D ;D ;D indeed sawdust everywhere ;D ;D ;D its just the removing the fence to use the thicknesser and having to lower the base to 5" to position the extractor dosent aid a" quick initial report " on the value and performance when you need to chop and change ;) |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139[offer now closed] Post by JFC on Nov 10th, 2006, 9:48pm ;) I can see how that will help in some cases . But its very dangerous isnt it . So how do i remove the key ? ;D |

naaahhh no danger as the dust extraction is a typical afterthought ;D the blades are enclosed with the guard and like any machine you dont enter an enclosed area or pass onto or over a machine bed if theres no need to or untill a safe working practise is in place keeping your mits more than a hands length away from danger ::) often with the use of a push stick or 2 ;D ;D ;) the key is just one off the wedges[on the dust extractor attachment] released by turning the screw a few times and clipping it in the fence side "wedge" slot |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139[offer now closed] Post by JFC on Nov 13th, 2006, 5:56pm Mine turned up today :-D I was a bit worried when i could lift the box myself and after opening it i spent the first half hour laughing . It looks like a Fisherprice my first planer / thicknesser :-D :-D Still i had some stock that needed thicknessing and i found it to be a great bit of kit :o Im very happy with it ;D |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139[offer now closed] Post by big_all on Nov 13th, 2006, 9:02pm i am well pleased with mine toooo ;D ;D i have only been "playing "with odd lengths off wood and making lots of smaller even odder bits as i have no specific task for it yet ;D ;D ;) hows your fence!!!!! my quote"one slight problem that i noticed earlier though is the fence is slightly hollow along part of its length ok top and bottom and either end looks like i will have to front it with 6mm ply or mdf to take out the hollow " !!! |

i must admit i do find colour schemes and actual colours funny also JFC... a few years ago i was party to initial testing on the Hitachi impact drivers prior to being fully launched /rolled out nation wide.. and the one i was given to test is made up of LIME GREEN and a sort of DAYGLO' SILVER FLAME STYLE body, and my grand kids refer to it as the RAY GUN!!!!! it really does look like a kiddies toy gun!!! funny or what, but they let me keep it after the test, so , hey ho , not quite as funny, but it sure as hell has been one GREAT bit of kit!!! still going strong, and with the abuse i give it!!! ;D |

Title: Re: planer thicknesser for £139[offer now closed] Post by JFC on Nov 13th, 2006, 10:25pm Not tried the fence yet as i needed to thickness some stock for beading last week so that was first on the list . I think it needs extensions on the in and out feed tables for bigger jobs but it got me out of trouble . The Lutz goes hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm This goes weeeeeeeeeeeeee but does the job . |
