Title: Framed Kitchen Units
Post by Titso on Dec 1st, 2006, 12:29am

I'm hoping to build my own kitchen units and was hoping to have a look at some books for inspiration.

The thing is, the only books I can find are about building kitchen carcasses similar to those "off the peg".

I was planning to make the units from a framed construction, and was looking for a bit of inspiration.  For example, I was wondering about how to reduce the cost by only using hardwood for the visible parts of the units, ie the doors, end panels and the front of the frames.

Can anybody point me in the direction of any good books on the subject?  Cheers, J.

Try to find some of the American books as they tend to use a lot more faceframe construction than we do. GMC publications and Tauton Press should have some suitable titles.

The carcases can still be made with MFC (Melamine faced chipboard) for cost saving and ease of cleaning, you then fit a hardwood frame usually about 38x18 finish size to the front and either use butt hinges cut into the frame or Blum type hinges with the correct type mounting plate. This pic and the next one show a bathroom vanity made this way.

Have a look at "Building Traditional Kitchen Cabinets" by Jim Tolpin from The Taunton Press it's very good and details face framing clearly.

Unless you want a really traditional kitchen I would go with Jasons advice and use melamine cabinets. You can get flat packed base units for less than £30 at BnQ, and they are not bad quality if you take some care in assembling them.

or

I could always plug next months "The Woodworker" magazine  ::) I believe they are going to cover face framing melamine faced chipboard cabinets [smiley=crossfingers.gif]
