Title: Need advice please
Post by corablimey on Dec 1st, 2006, 7:18am

I have now changed from BT Broadband to sky broadband, and I have a few questions I need help with, and hope someone who knows a bit can give me some help.

With my old BT broadband, I had the BT browser which had a 'Bookmark', so I would just drop down the menu and click onto my favourite site  :) with the new sky broadband I havent got a bookmark thingy, what can I do to get one?

Is there any way I can download the BT browser so at at least I would still have the bookmark option?

Also, can I still use the BT email addy even though I am not a subscriber any more?

Would I still get emails sent to me at my old addy, IE, mary.smith @ BT internet.com etc, or is that exstinct now I have gone over to sky?

Last one, for the moment anyway ::) would I have to notify ATT and other boards if my old BT addy is gone, and would I have to give them a new email addy for Pm or notifications etc.

Thankyou in advance for any help, as I havent a clue what happens when you change over, I would still like my BT addy, as a lot of people know me at that address, but I dont know if I am alowed to keep it, if I have left BT and gone over to a competitor.

i could be wrong but your e mail is based at your server so when you leave a server you loose your email you also loose your "bookmark"[favorates in my case] as they are also server based

you need to find a "favorates " list that isnt server based so you can access it from any server like google  http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

i could be wrong in every thing i say so wait for somone else to shoot me down in flames ;D ;D ;D ;)

What type of computer have you got??

Not using windows with Internet Explorer??  That as a favourites list as standard.

What browser is sky giving you to use??

Emails will be lost - You are best to set up a redirection domain (as I do), and then when you change providers, you can simply redirect your email to the new address.  Prices start at around £2.34 for a year.  So for that price you could setup unlimited email addy like this :

sam@corablimey.co.uk
tom@corablimey.co.uk
anythignelse@corablimey.co.uk

These are then directed to real addy's like your old BT one, or like the one you *should* have from sky?

You would be best to change the email with any places you have signd up - you can do this yourself by clicking "PROFILE" in the top menu, and then clicking "CONTACTS".

http://www.1and1.co.uk - use the "Is your domain available" box on the top right side - .co.uk is cheapest usually.

I believe Favorites (as per Internet Explorer) and bookmarks (as per BT Browser and possibly the Yahoo browser?) are slightly different beasts.

Personally I'd switch to using IE or Firefox as that works with anyones broadband.

If you can find where BT Browser stored it's Bookmarks you might be able to convert them to another browser format (like IE favorites) using this...

http://www.filedudes.com/Bookmark_Converter-download-24544.html

I've not tried it myself though. There are probably other bookmark converters around.

I've done a bit more digging. I think BT Browser is the Yahoo Browser in drag. In which case BT Yahoo stored you bookmarks on their server as Big_all said....

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/bkmk/details.html

Can you still get access to your BT Browser account? Perhaps via their web site than directly?

Next step is to figure out what browser Sky gave you.

When you switch ISP your old account (email address and any web site you may have set up using the free space they provide) will probably disappear within a month or so - sometimes sooner.

You will need to start using the email address Sky give you.

Thankyou all for your quick help and suggestions, we have now got the old BT browser back which still has all my bookmarks.
I am now transferring them to my favourites, just in case BT snuffs me out lol.
I am still using my BT email addy at the moment, but will have a back up plan for another one incase it goes pete tong. ;D

For the future and if you are useless on the PC like me. I open up both my emaill address book and my favourites and I do a screen capture, I then send that `picture` to my hotmail account and if for any reason my PC blows up or something else I have the addresses saved on my hotmail account so I can manually get them back.
I also use this for holidays ...I send scans of my passport glasses prescription and a few other things to my hotmail account in case I need the info on hols.

Just my pennies worth.

how do you do a screen capture

XP - Hold down CTRL and hit PrtScn (print screen) - top right of keyboard somewhere.

This places the screen capture into your clipboard.

Open Paint or similar, and paste it in ;)

Or download this FREE programme. Lectrician is correct but I find this programme easier to use. Just save the screen capture to desktop or wherever you want to put it.
