Hi All,

I've just had Virgin Broadband installed this morning (superb service if anyone is interested) and I asked for the cable to be run up into an upstairs spare room, which is where it now is. The modem only has one ethernet connector, which is connected straight into the PC.

I want to be able to use the PS3 to go online and challenge a million others to various games (Yes, sad I know, but immense fun), but it's in a downstairs living room.

I know I have the option of taking an enormously long ethernet cable and trailing it downstairs to the PS3, at the cost of then not being able to use the internet on the PC. Or, I can go wireless. I went to PC World and spoke to some "dude" with bumfluff who was neither use nor ornament about how to go about this, but he didn't know his butt from his elbow.

Can anyone explain what I need and how do I set it p so I can use broadband on the PC and PS3 without trailing cables all over?

I also have the Virgin Broadband, and its definitely slower than before Virgin took over.

Anyway I got an Linksys 2.4GHz wireless G broadband router, and connected from the modem to the router via an Belkin surge protector. I then plugged the computer direct to the router, and use the 3 laptops as wireless, for the one that wireless wasn't built in I used the Linksys Wireless G Notebook adapter.

I don't know how this would work with the PS3 but I would expect it too with no problem.

Setting up was almost plug and play

you need a wireless router suitable for use with cable broadband. The router will have an ethernet port which you connect to your cable modem and another group of ethernet ports for connecting computers. (if your router has a port for a phone line it almost certainly means you bought the wrong router).

at least according to wikipedia all european playstation 3's support wi-fi.

setup is generally pretty easy, remember to set up security on your wireless link to stop others nicking your connection.

And not only nicking your connection, but being able to then gain access to your computers on the network! Make sure you do setup the wireless security.

There will be an RJ45 'WAN' port for connection to your cable modem (Wide Area Network), and then usually 4 or more RJ45 ethernet ports for your 'LAN' (Local Area Network).

I have a PS3 and am on Virgin. The ways suggested previously all work. The PS3 has the option for hard wired Ethernet or wireless, they are both easy to set up. You can also set up your PS3 to use your computer (via the network) as a Media Server, so you can watch downloaded music and video on your telly. Programs like Windows Media Player (which most people have on their computers) have the option of using your PC as a Media Server.
You can also set up a PSP to link up with your PS3, so you can play your PS3 games on your PSP, surf the net etc. There are some PS3 games that use the PSP as a second screen. Driving games that use the PSP as a rear view mirror for example.
There is something coming out soon that turns your PS3 into a "slingbox", so you can record live TV and watch it from anywhere in the world etc (as long as you have an internet connection).
