Title: Batten or Bearer. Post by Dolallytap on Mar 28th, 2008, 3:40pm In Carpentry what is the difference between a batten and a bearer? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Would this be a good description? Bearer a term used for a batten in first fix carpentry or roofing which is normally concealed i.e. sawn timber not planed or machined timber. Batten a term used for a bearer in 2nd fix carpentry that is concealed or visible and usually planned or machined timber. |

A batten is usually fixed vertically and has something fixed to it. Batten is also used to describe the strips of wood that tile/slate is fixed to when roofing. Both could be 1st or 2nd fix Jason |
