Title: Batten or  Bearer.
Post by Dolallytap on Mar 28th, 2008, 3:40pm

In Carpentry what is the difference between a batten and a bearer?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Would this be a good description?

Bearer a term used for a batten in first fix carpentry or roofing which is normally concealed i.e. sawn timber not planed or machined timber.

Batten a term used for a bearer in 2nd fix carpentry that is concealed or visible and usually planned or machined timber.

A bearer usually goes below something and bears the load, but could also have something hung from it.

A batten is usually fixed vertically and has something fixed to it.

Batten is also used to describe the strips of wood that tile/slate is fixed to when roofing.

Both could be 1st or 2nd fix

So is it a batten or a bearer that helps support a shelf ?

In the enclosed drawing I have described the timber supporting the plywood as bearers is this correct?

Can't get your site up but without seeing it I would go with batten, but if its a trap door then "stop" may also be a possibility, will try the site again later
