Title: Turning off an alarm system ...
Post by Lee_Elms on Nov 14th, 2008, 8:34pm

Our house has a Castle Care-Tech Ltd.220 alarm system installed (by the previous owners) ... we would like to turn it off.

If we turn off the power to the alarm, and disconnect the back up battery (or allow it to discharge) the outside alarm sounder sounds.  We would prefer not to annoy the neighbours until it's battery runs down !

Any ideas / advice ?

No other real way other than to open the external sounder and disconnect it's internal battery (or for quickness, if you do not wish to re-use, snip the battery cable or piezo cable with some side cutters as soon as you have access inside the external sounder.

Once you have disabled the external, remove battery and mains from panel.

Thanks .. I rather thought that might be the case ... just that I'm certainly not happy myself on a ladder that high up, and was trying to avoid paying someone to do it !

When I had to move my exterior sounder I put it in a large ice box/cooler wrapped in a couple of towels. Once the lid was on the sound level was tolerable. And yes I did have ear defenders on 7 I needed them !

I tried to kill an external sounder without ear defenders on, once! The anti-tamper switch sets it off as soon as you mess with it. The next time I have to kill one it will be with my 6 pound hammer, that lives in the van.
I don't know why insurance companies insist on alarms, nobody pays any attention to them?!

I was naively hoping that to avoid those sort of problems the sounders would have a way that they could be turned off from the central system ... perhaps more modern systems have this ??

if it has 2 codes, one the house holders, and 2 the "engineers code", then they can usually be silenced for maintainance work!! via inputting the engineers code!

i know both my new system AND my old (now removed system) can/could be!

There is an engineers code hand written on the instruction booklet ... no idea if it is the correct one ... but I'll give it a try.

The engineer code will not 'disable' the external bell box.  As soon as you remove all power from the panel the beel box then recieves no power and enters it own 'defensive' state by self powering itself.

Thanks for the clarification.
