Title: home network Post by AndySX200 on Nov 27th, 2008, 12:02pm I have a laptop wireless conected to talktalk broaband,no problem. I have a PC I want to also connect to this wireless modem. The PC has a wireless connection to the modem but will not connect to the Net, I think it is because the PC does not have the dail up number/password. Can anyone help, I suppose I could phone talktalk helpline, but its abroard and the line is awful. Thanks |

Title: Re: home network Post by Lectrician on Nov 27th, 2008, 6:46pm You do not need to use your talk talk password or user ID on the laptop or the PC - The router has this info, and the router keeps itself connected to the internet ready for you. You need to ensure your TCP/IP settings are correct on the PC for it to be able to connect to the router, and then the internet. Goto START>RUN Type "CMD" and press return When the large'ish' black box appears, type "ipconfig" followed by return. copy and paste the text that is printed (right click and use 'mark'). or CTRL and printscreen, and then paste the screenshop into paint, save it, and then post it here using www.tinypic.com. This assumes XP, if it is vista, just type "CMD" into the 'search' box after clicking the START button. |

Title: Re: home network Post by AndySX200 on Nov 30th, 2008, 12:49pm i'm right with you 'til we get to copy and paste to tinypic. I don't understand how copying and pasting to this site gets my PC on line? apologies for being thick. |

Title: Re: home network Post by Lectrician on Dec 2nd, 2008, 5:59pm There is an IP address error. Goto your internet settings/properties for the wireless connection and find the TCP/IP settings page and tick the "Obtain An IP Address Automatically" box and the "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" box. You should be able to double click the the picture of the computer with an aerial in the lover right hand task bar tray to do this, otherwise use control panel. Are you using XP of Vista? |

Title: Re: home network Post by Lectrician on Dec 3rd, 2008, 4:39pm There must be some settings for your wireless connection. The easiest way would be to look at the windows task bar at the bottom, onthe far right near the clock. There should be a pic of a computer with a satalite on it. You could also look for "network connection" and it would be in there. |

Title: Re: home network Post by CWatters on Dec 4th, 2008, 1:20pm Try contol panel -> Network and internet connections -> Network Connections then right click on the one for the wireless connection and select properties. then the general tab and scroll down and select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Click properties. Should see this menu but perhaps with different settings. What do they say and are they same as your laptop? Also worth checking the Authentication tab (eg as well as the general tab mentioned above). Also worth starting IE on both machines and checking tools-> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN settings button. I'm not a super expert on all this but I also had a problem with my WinXP PC. I believe in my case the network connection wizard created an un-necessary "bridge". I note that you may also have a bridge set up so perhaps that's the problems. Unfortunately it's about five years since I did this and can't remember what I did to fix it. It's possible I just deleted the bridge but I don't recommend you do that without confirmation from someone else. I think I would check to see if your laptop also has a bridge set up (look in Network connections as above). |
