Title: Pool table
Post by wozzy on Feb 18th, 2009, 7:44pm

dont do much commercial work so open to ideas

pool area of a sports bar need the existing pool table lights replaced, they want downlights, the ceiling is approx 3.6 meters from memory. The lights will be on from the morning till late at night.  There is enough light around the tables so this is just to illumiate the tables.

i was thinking low voltage downlights and IRC lamps with a narrow beam?

any suggestions?

I'm not really into pool but I thought you normally used something like this. suspended above the table to eliminate shadows.

If they want regular 50mm halogen downlights.. Google says a full size table is 1.2 meters wide, 2.1 long and 0.84 high. So if ceiling is 3.6 meters...

Height of ceiling above table = 3.6 - 0.85 = 2.75 meters.

Min beam angle required to cover width of table  = 2 * (ArcTan(0.84/2/2.75)) = 17 degrees.

So the maths suggests something like a line of three downlights down the middle of the table with a 24 degree beam angle.

I'm no electrician but any fire regs issues for the ceiling?

If the pool table is leased (most likely), the landlord should approach the company leasing the table.  They may well supply a light fitting for free, possibly offer installation for free (not ideal for you!), or be able to offer a fitting cheaply.

We do many of these installs for a company that supplies tables, and also for many pubs.

Downlights would cast an odd light on the table.

the tables are owned by the establishment

they have proper pool table lights at the moment and want them ripping out due to people hitting their heads. i think this has as much to do with aesthetics (spelling) from the managements point of veiw.

Lighting design is a profession in it's own right. How many tables have they got? Perhaps install soem cheap GU10 lights above one one table and see what they think before doing all of them with 12V.

four tables

They hate mains voltage downlights at this place i mentioned it to them, and the maintaience man went on for ages how he hates changing the lamps in some mains ones they had fitted, so i had better stay clear of them.  I wanted to use 12v aswel to use IRC lamps to give a bit of extra light.

But isn't that because there are some crap bulbs out there?  I bought a lot of Aurora downlighters recently and they came with Aurora bulbs.  The luminaires are good and stylish but most of the bulbs have gone within hours.....the box label says 'average lifespan 3000 hours'...hollow laugh. Can I have the bulbs that last for 10,000,000 hours 'cos I got the ones at the other end of the 'average' lifespan.

I agree 12V IRC are better than 230V, I meant just demo 230V downlights on one table because they are cheap. If they don't like the way the downlights cast shadows the table you only have three holes to fix not 12+.

I just can't believe anyone would want to remove the proper lights in the first place, it looks pretty naff just over one table (Prince of Wales, Fleet), but for 4 it is going to look terrible. I also belive it will be very irritating to anyone wearing glasses!!! Personally I like the traditional chrome bar with green shades, which is what I had in my own pub :-).
