As A Napit member I am paying out £400 per year but at the moment only doing a few certificated jobs per year! Anyone know how I could avoid the outlay. I am a Part time Sparky but with full time outgoings!! Shame to give up with my skills but facing a dilema??
:-[. Dont want to stop doing the work but 'the certification schemes' seem to want to prevent me! I am in favour of part P registration but it is only hitting me in the pocket.

I am in the same boat Birty, except I did not join a scheme.
My bigger jobs are normally part of a bigger project, so the electrical bit gets added to the buildings notice along with the other building work. Smaller jobs are more maintenance type work, which don't require notification. For the others, I give the customer the cost of notifying and then it is up to them.

I just know that if they have to inform building control and pay a fee they probably wont use me!!! Being a part time qualified sparks is painful to the pocket!!

I have found that I am cheaper on bigger jobs than most of the other sparks, so the fee does not make me uncompetitive. A small job + fee will obviously be more than the competition.

It is a no win situation I am afraid, they are trying to kill off the little guy!

You have to be a member of a Competent Person scheme but does it have to be NAPIT? Are any of the other scheme operators cheaper?...

ELECSA will let you pay in instalments by direct debit. May not be so painful on the pocket, im not sure if the others do this.

Im not going to be with them forever but they are friendly and keep things simple.

NAPIT has a scheme called "JUST8". That let you notify up to 8 jobs a year.
Don't know if its still available - ask them!

Agreed, I remember when I was in your position, the cost of getting test instruments calibrated only to use a few times for example really hurts. These days it's not an issue. You obviously do things by the book which is to be commended, I'm sure there are many out there who don't bother with a lot of the things we do, calibration, insurance, building notifications etc etc
