Title: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by mrorchard on Oct 4th, 2009, 10:07pm I have opened up the partition walls between Kitchen - Hall - Dining room to create an open space. I now need to relocate the light switches. There is insufficient slack in the cables and accessing the full cable route is problematic. I therefore need to cut and extend cable. The joint will end up in the partition wall and will not be accessible. Appreciate help and guidance on best approach and part B compliance. I have searched previous posts but remain confused! Thanks. |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by LS on Oct 4th, 2009, 11:45pm Best option is to crimp the connections together and enclose in a suitable enclosure e.g. chocbox or alternative heat shrink over. The crimp connections can be bought relatively cheaply from an electrical wholesaler, as can the other parts. Not sure if Part-B (Fire-Safety) has any relevance unless the cable in question is a fire rated cable or serves something of importance. |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by Y3 on Oct 5th, 2009, 6:58pm Think he means part P, if all your doing is repositioning the switches and extending some cables to carry out this task and it's not in the kitchen itself then part p doesn't come into it. I would use the ashlay non maintainable (17th edition) joint box. It has push connections and the cable is supported within the JB, a bit like a 13a plug allows a cable to be. They are available for lighting and extending 2.5mm radials or rings etc.... Regards Carl |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by TIMBA-WOLF on Oct 5th, 2009, 7:42pm LS and Y3, i think "mrorchard" may actually be asking about part "B" fire regs, as when i was a fireman (many years before the term fire-fighter appeared) one thing fire officers had to check for in renovations etc were in-accessible Junction boxes, Morettes etc, as back then, i know any IN-ACCESSIBLE joins had to be soldered and then covered!! and not crimped! just a thought!! |

I don't think I mentioned crimping anywhere in my post :-? I don't know if that was what you meant? I think I see where your coming from, but I'm not 100% there yet ;) Regards Carl |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by TIMBA-WOLF on Oct 5th, 2009, 11:27pm LS mentioned the crimping, and i was just giving my view/take on the newbies question! and a lot of the BCO's i have encountered lately require a new section/run of cable and not a joint if not accessible... |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by mrorchard on Oct 5th, 2009, 11:39pm Thanks for responses. Sorry to confuse the regs bit was really understanding if the work was notifiable and if i could undertake as a DIYer. There is one kitchen light switch but could put on the hall side of the wall given most of it is now opened up. Y3 - Is the ashlay JB ok to have in my partition wall (where not accessible), if it is that sounds like a good solution - will save me getting all the crimping gear. Thanks again - appreciate you help. |

Title: Re: Moving light switches - need to extend cables Post by Flashbang on Oct 6th, 2009, 5:46pm Hi The Ashley JB is ideal. Its designed to be installed in inaccessible locations. Go for it!
