Hi Guys hope you can help, I am finishing off a self build and my mate who has been an electricians mate for 30 years did my installation and the local authority have done checks and certification. Everything is superb but they have said the installation is unsatisfactory for the following reason. I have an 18 way Merlin Gerin board and am using 14 circuits. The first is a dedicated cooker circuit which has passed all the tests along with the rest of them,but as I have a gas cooker I have not installed and MCBO as it was 30 quid and I have blanked it off with the other 4 unused circuits. they are quoting bs 7671 522.6.6 which I understand ,but are they being too fussy, do I need to protect a circuit not being used but which is otherwise sound ? comments gratefully received thanks

Is it connected to anything in the CU? For £30 is it worth arguing over?

CW the pragmatist in me agrees but I have now spent so many 30 quids it is beginning to hurt, to be honest whilst the LA have agreed to do it that came from Building control,the electrical people were never happy about it and I think they are looking for anything to trip me up, no pun intended

I just wish that only qualified electricians were let loose on electrical stuff. This part P crap is a mess. We should be like the gas boys. If not qualified...don't touch!!!! Or is our job so easy that anyone can do it?
I like to help when I can but if it come to complete re-wires etc I think a little common whatsit should be applied. Being a sparks mate is all fine and well but why not go all the way and become a spark? If one knows enough to install as a spark...

Yo "Bingbat" like the new name, I thought that exact same thing when reading the OP, 30 years is a long time to be a mate, i must say!!

Back to the OP, its only one more £30.00, alternatively, rip the circuit out if its not going to be used?

Trouble is, the 'gas boys' are just as bad in some cases.

A great many do not carry out all the necessary tests when issuing gas safety certs. Most do not understand the bonding requirements and within their part of the industry I expect there are just as many complaints about barely-skilled monkeys being given credentials.

have i read this wrong? they want the five unused circuits RCBOd? you only have four spare ways. Couldnt the cables just be pulled out the fuseboard and shoved somewhere? what do you mean you blanked them off?

im struggling with this one. :-/

I think BC are going along the lines of that a circuit has been installed but could later be put into service with an MCB rather than an RCBO, so wouldn't comply and they have signed it off to say it does? Maybe I'm wrong but that's my theory!

how about this view.

you dont install protection now but will want to energise that at some point, lets say 10 years.

now your 30 quid rcbo is 100 quid or worse still and you have to change the whole board!
If you want to energise a dead circuit in the future you will need a spark to test it first wheras if it is live and ready now then you just do the final connection and all is good.
