Title: 40 0r 43mm? Post by runes on Aug 10th, 2010, 9:13pm hi guys, i'm refitting my bathroom out at the moment and have come to a slight hicup. the existing basin waste pipe and connections states 1 1/2" / 40mm push fit. i've been to my local plumbers to pick up said 40mm only to come back home to find it is 43 and fits solvent weld connections. so thought some monkey there had got it wrong and dindnt kick up a fuss. went in today and asked for 40mm, clarified the 40mm and 1 1/2 inch measurements only to find when i got home its 43mm again! >:( what the &%$@ is going on here? before i go back tommorrow morning and start ranting, can someone clear this up for me please? i have now wasted to evenings without a basin due to this and needless to say its frustrating |

Title: Re: 40 0r 43mm? Post by thescruff on Aug 10th, 2010, 11:09pm First basin are nearly always 32mm. Secondly different makes have different sizes. Pushfit is always slightly smaller. Take a bit of pipe with you and make sure it's pushfit and not solvent weld you're buying. |

Title: Re: 40 0r 43mm? Post by londonman on Aug 11th, 2010, 11:25am No, it's not the guy behind the desks' fault. It's the industry and history. Waste pipes are the biggest pain in the arse known to man. Especially if, like you, you are trying to retrofit into an existing installation. As you've found out. They chop and change sizes - imperial went to metric but then as Scruff says it also depends if it is solvent or pushfit. So do what Scruff says. It's the only way. |

Title: Re: 40 0r 43mm? Post by greg on Aug 11th, 2010, 6:02pm When in the merchants are you asking for 1 1/2 pushfit, if you dont specify they will generally just give you solvent weld. What colour is the exisiting waste pipe? |

Gets my vote... and don't just compare that pipe with the new pipe. Test both in a socket to see if they fit the same. |
